1. Who Knows tracks

They don't know
They don't know
Like i know
Like i know
Do you know
They don't know
I don't know
I don't know
What my baby
What my baby
Put on down
Put on down
What my baby
What my baby
I just came back from
I don't know
I can't count it
I can't count it
I just can't find this town
They don't know
I'm lookin' for my seller
I don't know my baby
Have you seen her
Have you freed her yeah
Have you seen her
Oooh hhhooo
Talkin' about my baby
Goin' down
Talkin' about my baby
I just came in
I just came in baby
I just came in
I just came in
Spread the magic baby
all in my bed
She got chains, attached to my head
Talkin' about
Talkin' about
Talkin' about my baby
I don't know about it
They don't know what i know
They don't know like i know
All the time i've been hangin' around
All the time i hang around
She didn't know
Ha she didn't care
She didn't know
She didn't care
And she go walkin' down the street singin'
Everybody die
Da da dada da doo doo
They don't know
Nobody knows
They don't know
Just don't know
Da da da

2. Machine Gun tracks

Machine Gun
Tearing my body all apart

Machine Gun, yeah
Tearing my body all apart

Evil man make me kill ya
Evil man make you kill me
Evil man make me kill you
Even though we’re only families apart

Well I pick up my axe and fight like a bomber
(You know what I mean)
Hey! And your bullets keep knocking me down

Hey, I pick up my axe and fight like a bomber now
Yeah, but you still blast me down to the ground

The same way you shoot me down, baby
You’ll be going just the same
Three times the pain,
and your own self to blame
Hey, Machine Gun

I ain’t afraid of your mess no more, babe
I ain’t afraid no more
After a while, your, your cheap talk don’t even cause me pain,
so let your bullets fly like rain

’Cause I know all the time you’re wrong baby
And you’ll be going just the same
Yeah, Machine Gun
Tearing my family apart
Yeah, yeah, alright
Tearing my family apart

(Don’t you shoot him down)
(He’s ’bout to leave here)
(Don’t you shoot him down)
(He’s got to stay here)
(He ain’t going nowhere)
(He’s been shot down to the ground)
(Oh where he can’t survive, no, no)

Yeah, that’s what we don’t wanna hear anymore, alright?
(No bullets)
At least here, huh huh
(No guns, no bombs)
Huh huh
(No nothin’, just let’s all live and live)
(You know, instead of killin’)

May this be
Love or just
Confusion Born out of
frustration wracked
feelings - of not
being able to
make true physical
love to the
Universal gypsy Queen
True, free expressed music
Darling guitar please
rest. Amen

3. Them Changes tracks

(Jimi: "buddy miles is goin' to do something he wrote called 'them changes'.")

4. Power Of Soul tracks

(Spoken:)
Shoot down some of those airplanes your flyin',
specially the ones that are flyin' too low (x2)

Come on back up to earth my friend
Come on back up with me
We've all been up through the night time, baby
Now let's read the rays of the ???

With the power of soul
Anything is possible (x2)

Flyin' too much today
It's so groovy to float around sometimes
Even a jellyfish will agree to that

Yeah, but that old jellyfish
been floatin' around so long
Lord, he ain't got a bone
in his jelly back
Floatin' everyday and every night
Ridin' high is a risk
Sometimes the wind ain't right

With the power of soul
Anything is possible
With the power of you
Anything you wanna do

5. Message Of Love tracks

(Jimi's going to do a thing he wrote called "Message Of Love")

Well i travel at the speed of a reborn man
i got a lot of love to give
from the mirrors of my hand
i sent a message of love
don't you run away
look at your heart baby
come on along with me today
well i am what i am thank god
some people just don't understand
well help them god
find yourselef first
and then your tool
find yourself first
don't you be no fool
here comes a woman
wrapped up in chan
messin' with that fool baby
your life is pain
if you wanna be free
come on along with me
don't mess with the man
he'll never understand
i said find yourself first
and then your talent
work hard in your mind
so you can come alive
you beter prove to the man
you're as strong as him
cause in the eyes of god
you're both children to him
da da doo doo
everybody come alive
everybody live alive
everybody love alive
everybody hear my message
hey, ooooo X5

Well, now a while lotta people put me down a lotta changes
My girl had called me a disgrace

The tears burnin'
Tears burnin' me
Tears burnin' me
Way down in my heart
Well, you know it's too bad, little girl,
It's too bad
Too bad we have to part (have to part)

Dig
Gonna leave this town, yeah
Gonna leave this town
Gonna make a whole lotta money
Gonna be big, yeah
Gonna be big, yeah
I'm gonna buy this town

What I'm gonna do,
What I'm gonna do

9. Stop tracks

You better stop it babe
You better stop it babe
Stop your jivin' 'round
Stop it baby
Stop your doggin' 'round

Stop
Baby can't you see that I can't take it no more
Stop
Now baby can't you see I'm 'bout to go through the floor

Never knew how good love could be
Love done gone and made a damn fool of me
Everything is hazy
One more kiss and you drive me crazy baby

Baby stop
Hold it just a minute while I go catch my breath
Stop
Baby can't you see I'm bout to scare me half to death

Thought I was the captain of my ship
Oh yeah love has gone and made me lose my grip
Everything is hazy
One more kiss and you drive me crazy baby

Stop, stop, stop, stop

Stop
Baby can't you see that I can't take it no more
You know how I'm feelin' baby
Stop
Baby can't you see I'm bout to go through the floor

Never knew how good love could be
Love done gone and made a damn fool of me
Everything is hazy
One more kiss and you drive me crazy baby

Stop, stop, stop, stop

Your jivin' baby
Your messin' around
Until mornin' time

Stop it baby
Everyday, yeah
Stop your jivin' around

Stop, stop, stop, stop, stop, stop

Hendrix, sans the Experience, hooked up with bassist Billy Cox and drummer Buddy Miles to record this hard electric funk outing live at the Fillmore East in New York on December 31, 1969. While the rhythm section may have lacked the chops for wild free-form excursions, they provided Hendrix with a no-nonsense groove for his funkier R&B experiments. "Machine Gun," the album's highlight, features some of Hendrix's greatest playing. His dramatically violent soundscapes convey the horror of the war experience, with brilliantly controlled use of feedback and rapid-fire bursts of notes. -- Rick Clark, All Music Guide

Additional Notes:

This 1998 re-issue of BAND OF GYPSYS has been digitally remastered by the original engineer, Eddie Kramer.

Personnel: Jimi Hendrix (electric guitar, vocals); Billy Cox (bass); Buddy Miles (drums, vocals).

Recorded live at the Fillmore East, New York, New York on December 31, 1969. Includes liner notes by John McDermott.

Following the breakup of the Experience, Hendrix took a sabbatical in Woodstock, New York, hooked up with bassist Billy Cox, his old Air Force running mate, and began jamming with a wide variety of musicians, including R&B drummer Buddy Miles. Hendrix had become self-conscious about his image as a showman and rocker, and the limitations of thrashing through the same repertoire night after night.

BAND OF GYPSYS was an attempt by Hendrix to redefine himself, and marked a slight return to his roots in R&B and the blues, accompanied by a solid, groove-oriented rhythm section. During their brief tenure as a band, Band Of Gypsys performed New Year's Eve at the Fillmore East, and this live recording captures some of Hendrix's most monumental solos, particularly his long, intensely emotional improvisation on "Machine Gun" and his pithy blues work on "Who Knows."

Buddy Miles' "Them Changes" illustrates Hendrix's mastery of funk, while "Message Of Love" and "Power Of Soul" demonstrate his remarkable ability to provide a simultaneous rhythm accompaniment and melodic counterpoint to his vocals, in the blues tradition of Robert Johnson.

Reviews

One of Jimi's Hendrix's most impressive achievement, Band of Gypsys, was recorded live at the Fillmore East in New York City during 4 smash performances on December 31, 1969 and January 1, 1970. Jimi's newly formed Band of Gypsys band featured, Buddy Miles on drums and Billy Cox on bass. This was the last officially authorized album from Jimi Hendrix.
Originally issued in April 1970 in the United States and later that June in the UK, the album has long been billed as the birthplace of Funk.

W&A Reviews
Band Of Gypsys (1970)
- Released to meet contractual obligations, this somewhat disappointing live record was cut on New Year's Eve, 1969/70. We're listing it as a "studio" record because it consists entirely of material not released elsewhere, most of which Hendrix had worked on in the studio; and if features the new Cox/Miles rhythm section, which doesn't appear on any other full-length release. Unfortunately, the record itself is mired in a derivative, monotonic soul/R & B style that is totally uncharacteristic of Hendrix's other work ("Power Of Soul"). This is the fault of Hendrix's drummer, Buddy Miles, who lasted only a few months thanks to having none of Mitch Mitchell's startling technical proficiency, but all of a second-rate R & B entertainer's vapid showmanship (witness Miles' excruciating vocals, as on his well-known tune "Changes"). Some of it is brilliant anyway ("Machine Gun," a gut-wrenching masterpiece that Hendrix never had a chance to perfect in the studio; numerous solos). In 1999, the Hendrix family released two discs worth of selections from the same concerts (apparently leaving off some of the original takes) and retitled the collection Live At Fillmore East; we'll review that version once we get our hands on it. (JA)
- You can't go wrong with this if you're a fan, and it's interesting to see the R&B influence that later appeared on Cry Of Love, but neophytes should start with his studio albums. (DBW)
