This electric blues-rock number if one of the few original tunes the then-unknown Hendrix performed with the Blue Flame in tiny Greenwich Village nightclubs in 1966. The recording that appears on Valleys of Neptune dates from 1967's Axis: Bold as Love sessions with 1987 overdubs from bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell. The song was re-recorded in 1968 and released as "Look Over Yonder" on Hendrix's second posthumous studio album, Rainbow Bridge.

01. Stone Free tracks

Everyday in the week i'm in a different city
If i stay too long people try to pull me down
They talk about me like a dog
Talkin' about the clothes i wear
But they don't realise they're the ones who's square
Hey!
And that's why
You can't hold me down
I don't want to be down i gotta move
Hey
Stone free do what i please
Stone free to ride the breeze
Stone free i can't stay
I got to got to got to get away
Alright
Listen to this baby
A woman here a woman there try to keep me in a plastic cage
But they don't realise it's so easy to break
But sometimes i get a ha
Feel my heart kind of runnin' hot
That's when i've got to move before i get caught
And the is why, listen to me baby, you can't hold me down
I don't want to be tied down
I gotta be free
Owh!
I said
Stone free do what i please
Stone free to ride the breeze
Stone free i can't stay
Got to got to got to get away
Yeah ow!
Tear me loose baby
Yeah!
Stone free to ride on the breeze
Stone free do what i please
Stone free i can't stay
Stone free i got to i got to get away
Stone free go on down the highway
Stone free don't try to hold me back baby
Stone free oh yeah baby
Stone free got to got to get away
Stone free goodbye baby

02. Valleys of Neptune tracks

I feel the ocean swaying me...
Washing away all my pains.
See where I was wounded,
Remember the scar?
Now you can't see a thing...
And I feel no pain -

Singing about the Valley of Sunsets
Green and blue... Canyons too
Singing about Atlantis love songs.
The Valleys of Neptune is arising.

Mercury liquid... Emerald's shining
Telling me where I came from -
Honey Sun... Pourquise Bed he
Lays in -... on the Burning
Edge Horizon.

I'm sailing on the Bluebird's mission...
Bubble and curls and tiptoes in the foam -
See the wind make love to all
The ocean... Joy spread and
The massage got home -

Singing about the Valley of Sunsets...
Purple and gold... the Armies of the Lord
Before ancient Egypt, there were moon trips...
The Valleys of Neptune is arising -

Look out East coast, but you're
Gonna have a neighbor,
A rebirth land...
The praying Burning Sands.

We know there were worlds
So much older...
And they shall rise, and
Tell us much more the truth of man -

I see visions of sleeping peaks
Erupting...
Releasing all hell that
Will shake the Earth from end to end -
And this ain't bad news, good news,
Or any news... it's just the truth,
Better save your souls while
You can -

Singing about the New Valleys
Of the Sunrise... Rainbow clean,
The world is gonna be...
Singing about getting ready for the new tide...
The Valleys of Neptune is arising.

04. Hear My Train A Comin' tracks

Well I wait around the train station
Waitin’ for that train
Waitin’ for the train, yeah
Take me, yeah, from this lonesome place
Well now a whole lotta people put me down a lot ‘a changes
My girl had called me a disgrace

The tears burnin’
Tears burnin’ me
Tears burnin’ me way down in my heart
Well you know it’s too bad, little girl, it’s too bad, too bad we have to part

Gonna leave this town, yeah
Gotta leave this town
Gonna make a whole lotta money
Gonna be big, yeah
Gonna be big yeah
I’m gonna buy this town
I’m gonna buy this town, an’ put it all in my shoe (might even give a piece to you)
That’s what I’m gonna do, what I’m gonna do, what I’m gonna do

Though there have been many posthumous releases from Jimi
Hendrix's archives since his tragic death, the recently-
announced 'Valleys of Neptune' isn't meant to be a "lost"
album. Rather, it's a look at the creative period in
Hendrix's life between the 1968 release of 'Electric
Ladyland' and his legendary appearance at Woodstock the
following summer.

"In the aftermath of 'Electric Ladyland,' he made a series
of recordings with the original Experience," co-producer,
author and Experience Hendrix catalog director John
McDermott tells Spinner. "When they effectively stopped
working as a three-man recording unit, he brought in
[bassist] Billy Cox -- this album captures that transition.
We don't want to over-dramatize it. This is that missing
period of time."

The dozen tracks on 'Valleys of Neptune' reflect a time
where Hendrix, finding his way with a new band while
fighting contractual problems, was blossoming creatively.
Featuring reworked hits like 'Fire' and 'Red House' as well
as fully-realized songs that have never officially been
released, the album shows that Hendrix was embarking in a
new direction, one that would later be heard on 'Band of
Gypsys.' While the album is due out on March 9, check out
Spinner's exclusive premiere of the title track below to
hear what McDermott refers to as a "snapshot" into a part of
Jimi's life that's rarely been heard.

CD Edition:
Valleys Of Neptune is the newly compiled album of 12 fully realized studio recordings, and more than 60 minutes of music never commercially available. Centered around tracks recorded during a pivotal and turbulent four-month period in 1969, Valleys Of Neptune unveils the original Jimi Hendrix Experience's final studio recordings, as the group lays down the foundation for its follow-up to Electric Ladyland, alongside the guitar superhero's first sessions with bassist Billy Cox, an old army buddy he'd recruited into his new ensemble.

Valleys Of Neptune provides an essential, compelling, and up-til-now largely unseen view of what Jimi Hendrix was up to musically in the critical period between the release of Electric Ladyland in October 1968 and the 1970 opening of his own Electric Lady Studios in Greenwich Village, the state of the art facility where he would begin his final project, the ambitious double album First Rays Of The New Rising Sun.

Valleys of Neptune is originality electrified, offering more than 60 minutes of previously unreleased Jimi Hendrix music, originally recorded, and newly mixed for this historic release, by Hendrix's longtime engineer Eddie Kramer, who first worked with the guitarist on Are You Experienced in 1967. Valleys Of Neptune is produced by Janie Hendrix, John McDermott (who contributes detailed liner notes to the album) and Eddie Kramer.

"Valleys of Neptune" has long been one of the most sought after of any commercially unavailable Jimi Hendrix recording and sees it's debut nearly forty years after Jimi finished recording the track at New York's Record Plant in May of 1970.

Other highlights on Valleys Of Neptune include blazing studio covers of Elmore James' classic "Bleeding Heart" and Cream's "Sunshine Of Your Love" as well as premier performances of original Hendrix compositions like "Ships Passing Through The Night," "Lullaby For The Summer" and The Jimi Hendrix Experience's the original un-dubbed rendition of "Hear My Train A Comin'." Also included in Valleys Of Neptune is "Mr. Bad Luck," a Jimi Hendrix Experience track, produced by Chas Chandler during the 1967 Axis: Bold As Love sessions.

Vinyl Edition:
Limited edition, ALL ANALOG LP is pressed on 180 gram audiophile grade vinyl. The first 5,000 copies of this release will be individually numbered. RTI's world class facility in Camarillo, California will be used for album production.

Valleys of Neptune is a posthumous studio album by American Psychedelic Rock musician Jimi Hendrix. Released in the United States on March 9, 2010, the album boasts "12 previously unreleased studio recordings,"[2] including the title track, "one of the most sought after of all of Hendrix's commercially unavailable recordings."[2] The tracks on Valleys of Neptune were largely self-produced by Hendrix, and received extra posthumous production from Janie Hendrix, Eddie Kramer and John McDermott for Experience Hendrix, L.L.C.[3] Largely recorded in 1969 following the release of Electric Ladyland, the album predominantly features the original lineup of The Jimi Hendrix Experience: vocalist and guitarist Hendrix, bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell.[3] The lead single released from the album was "Valleys of Neptune", on February 1, 2010, followed by "Bleeding Heart" on March 1;[4] music videos were produced for both songs.

Background

The majority of the tracks featured on Valleys of Neptune were recorded in early 1969, while Hendrix was experimenting with songs for his unfinished fourth album, following the successful release of Electric Ladyland in September 1968. Numerous different versions have been released, both officially and otherwise, and the majority of the 'previously unreleased' recordings present on the 2010 album have been released in one form or another before, albeit sometimes in inferior quality or different versions.

Reception

Writing for music website MusicRadar.com, critic Joe Bosso compiled a track-by-track review of Valleys of Neptune, an album in the whole that he described as "one of the best albums of 2010".[5] Ludovic Hunter-Tilney in the Financial Times was equally positive, awarding the album a four-star (of a maximum five) rating and describing it as "a cut above the many posthumous cash-ins released in [Hendrix's] name."[6] Ann Powers in the Los Angeles Times awarded the album "Two and a half stars (Out of four)", summarising her review by saying: "Fans will be fascinated by these bluesy riffs with the Experience, but this album of unreleased material from the archives doesn't convey much that was unknown."[7]
